Rodney Maxwell Ownby, 71, of Dillwyn, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026, with his devoted wife of 44 years, Sandra, by his side. Rodney was preceded in death by his parents, Max Ownby and Alma Harris Ownby, his brother, Jerry Ownby, and his sister, Barbara Ownby Shumaker.
He leaves behind a legacy of love through his wife, Sandra Ownby; his daughter, Rene Marion (Kevin); and his son, TJ Waycaster (Stephanie). Rodney was a proud and loving grandfather to Casey Ingle (Tyler), Chyenne Gentry (Josh), Blake Waycaster (Haley), Jak Waycaster, and CeCe Waycaster, and a cherished great-grandfather to Leighton Ingle, Brooks Ingle, Storm Waycaster, Layla Gentry, Nevaeh Waycaster, and Baby Boy Gentry.
Rodney spent much of his career with VDOT, where his strong work ethic and reliability were well known. After retirement, he found joy in the simple things he loved most—hunting, fishing, playing music, and those nightly garage visits shared with his nephews Robbie and Jay, along with his dear friend Bobby. Some of his happiest moments were spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he adored endlessly and loved to spoil at every opportunity.
Rodney loved fiercely. He and Sandra shared an incredible 44 years together, never spending a night apart—a true testament to their deep bond and unwavering devotion. He was a man who loved his family and friends wholeheartedly, always willing to help anyone in need, armed with a great sense of humor, a kind heart, and his signature steering-wheel tapping.
Though he will be deeply missed, Rodney’s spirit will live on through the countless lives he touched, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave so freely.
The family will receive friends at PCC Powhatan Campus on Thursday, February 5th at 1:00pm for a visitation followed by the funeral service at 2:00pm (reception to follow)
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to PCC. Mailing address P.O. Box 834 Powhatan VA 23139 (please include "in memory of Rodney Ownby" in the memo line)
