Peggy Bickford Obituary

A Gathering and Celebration of the Life Lived by Peggy Emert Bickford will take place Saturday, August 28th, 2021 @ 12 Noon at Passion Community Church - Riverside Campus located at 2723 James Madison Highway, Bremo Bluff, Virginia 23022. Peggy's final words were "My work is Done, but there is More to Do and ya'll need to Do It." Hope you can join us and share in this Celebration of a Life Well Lived.

Peggy Emert Bickford, 68, entered her Heavenly home on April 16, 2020 after a valiant fight with cancer.  Peggy is survived by her husband of 48 years, Steve; her brother Roy Andrew Emert, Jr.  (Susan); mother in law, Lois Bickford, and sister in law, Becky Gallamore (Don).

Peggy was born on June 17, 1951 to Roy Andrew Emert and Janie Elizabeth O’Bryant Emert. She graduated from Buckingham High School in 1969. After high school Peggy attended Bluefield College, graduating with the Class of 1971.  On August 7, 1971 she married her high school sweetheart.  The couple resided in New Canton, VA where Peggy worked for the US Postal Service for 31years and retired as the Arvonia Postmaster.

Peggy was a faithful member of Passion Community Church where she served on the Guest Services team. Her contagious smile and loving heart greeted people each Sunday as they entered church.  Peggy also hosted a weekly small group in her home which became her loving, extended family. She was an example of a life lived in balance of right belief and right actions.  Peggy had a strong faith and that never weakened. She saw everything given to her as a tool to bless and help others.  The last words she spoke were “My work is done, there is more to do, and ya’ll need to do it.” In the end she continued to encourage others to carry the torch and share God’s love.

Peggy was an avid sports fan and loved cheering on her Tennessee Volunteers. She and Steve also spent many weekends on the sidelines watching the Bluefield College Rams.  Bluefield College held a special place in Peggy’s heart and she was active serving her alma mater. She served on the President’s Advisory Council, the Centennial Campaign Steering Committee, and hosted the Central Virginia Alumni Reunion during the summer at her home.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Bluefield College, 3000 College Drive, Bluefield, VA 24605. Please add “Peggy Bickford” to the memo section of the check.

Peggy is also survived by her dear friend and as she referred to him, her adopted son, Jack Thomas. The family would also like to give special thanks to Heartland Hospice for their care and support in her final days.
