Obituary

Marshall Snead Smith passed away on the morning of December 11, 2021, at his farm in Buckingham County, Virginia.  He was 82.

He was born on March 25, 1939, in Cartersville, Virginia, one of 11 children of Robert and Lacy Smith.  He is survived by Kitty, his wife of 59 years, and his children Ricky Smith of Sumter, South Carolina, Suzanne Hunt of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, and Dana Crone of Fluvanna, Virginia; grandchildren Scott Smith, Elizabeth Hunt, Christine Crone, Caroline Hunt-Bartel, and Justin Crone; and one great grandchild on the way.  He was preceded in death by two brothers and six sisters.

Marshall was a deputy with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department from 1964 to 1987, and served as Sheriff of Cumberland County from 1988 to 1994.  He was a lifelong and avid hunter of quail, raccoons, and rabbits; he took great pride in breeding and training Blue Tick beagles for hunting.  Horses and sports were always a part of his life; he took great pleasure in trail riding with his family and friends, as well as coaching and following his children's baseball and softball teams.

Due to covid concerns service will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
