John Daniel Wood, Jr, age 92, of Buckingham, Virginia passed away on February 21, 2020. He was born on September 2, 1927, in Buckingham, Virginia, the son of the late John Daniel Wood Sr. and Annie Warsing Wood Davis.
After retiring from carpentry in the early 70s, he took pride in growing the biggest gardens and orchards possible. He also enjoyed making colorful bird houses and bird feeders, to which he gave away to countless family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Waycaster Ownby Wood; his first wife and mother of his children, Cecilia Newton Wood Branch; brothers, George Brooke Wood, and James Alexander Wood; sisters, Adelle Wood Cumby, and Audrey Wood Smith; son, Kenneth Wayne Wood Sr; grandson, James R Wood; and several beloved dogs over the years that were his true best friends.
He is survived by his children, Gloria Wood Waycaster and husband Michael, of Dillwyn; John Daniel "Danny" Wood, III, and wife, Barbara, of Cartersville; James Roger "Jimmy" Wood of Dillwyn; and Susan Wood Taylor and husband Steve of Dillwyn; stepson, Dale Ownby and husband, Victor Pena, of Powhatan; brother Franklin Delano Wood and wife, Betty; sisters, Anne Jamerson, and husband Irving, and Joyce Edwards and husband John Larson; 11 grandchildren, 18 great grand children; and his cherished dog, Blake.
A funeral service will be held on, Sunday, February 23, at 2:00pm at Dunkum Funeral Home in Dillwyn, followed by graveside service at Buckingham Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 1:00pm till 2:00pm.
