James Spencer, III Obituary

James G. “Buddy” Spencer III, age 82, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on January 28, 2026. After a courageous battle with cancer, Buddy gained his angel wings and entered his heavenly home, where he was welcomed by Jesus with open arms.

Buddy was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Sarah “Betty” Spencer; his cherished son, James Spencer IV, and his wife, Sandy; his beloved grandchildren, Brittany Leonard (Johnny) and James Hayden Spencer (Julia); and his great-grandchildren, Daxton, Callum, and a baby girl expected in June. He is also survived by his sister, Doris Whorley.

Buddy leaves behind many treasured family members, including his special nieces Brandy Amos, Amanda Cook, Karen Kitchen, and Sylvia Dunkum, along with many others he loved dearly. He is also survived by his special nephew, Billy Whitworth; dear friends Jason and Jan Gormours; and his close friend and loving brother at heart, Carl “Bo” Allen.

A faithful member of White Hall Church, Buddy worshiped under the guidance of Pastor Billy Swan and lived his life grounded in faith. He loved the Lord with all his heart and found great joy in gospel music.

Buddy was known for his outgoing personality, infectious smile, and kind spirit—he truly never met a stranger. He enjoyed hunting, dancing, softball, football, and NASCAR, and he had a gift for making everyone around him feel welcome and loved.

After 41 years of dedicated service, Buddy retired from Ready Mix Concrete, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, loyalty, and integrity.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on February 21, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Dunkum Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Charlottesville, VA, or to White Hall Church, 860 Main Street, Dillwyn, VA 23936.

Buddy will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

The family would like to thank everyone for their kindness, prayers and love shown during Buddy's illness.
