James Mathew (Jim, Jimmie, Big Horse, Mr. Ragland, If you don’t mind) Ragland
83, of Buckingham, passed away on Monday, January 6, 2025 in Dillwyn, Virginia.
He was born on June 17, 1941, a son of the late Lee Garland Ragland, Sr. and
Courtney Louise (Taylor) Ragland. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in
death by his daughter, Gwendolyn Hope Ragland; four sisters, Virginia Johnson,
Marjorie Maddox, Flossie Tucker and Dorothy Adcock; and six brothers, Woodrow,
Elwood, Benson, Odell, Junior and Jack Ragland. Jimmie was a lifelong member of
Glenmore Community Church and served his church in many capacities. He
retired from Uniroyal/Goodrich in 1998 after 35+ years of service. He was a
charter member of Buckingham County Fire Department, Glenmore Division. In
2021 he was declared a lifetime member of the fire department after 53 years of
service. He was also a charter member of Buckingham County Volunteer Rescue
Squad, Glenmore Division for 10+ years. Jimmie’s hobbies included hunting,
gardening, carpentry, plumbing and helping numerous family members and
friends however he could. He was a “Jack of all trades, a master of none”. He never
met a stranger. He could carry on a conversation with a complete stranger for
hours. Survivors include his wife of 62 years Hazel (LeSueur) Ragland; daughter,
Jacqueline Kay Wagner (Chris); son James Todd Ragland (Carol Jacobs); three
grandchildren, Matthew Wagner (Meagan), Ethan Wagner (Janean) and Megan
Ragland; and five great grandchildren, Gwyneth, Grayce, Elias, Emilia, and Jason
Wagner. He is also survived by three sisters; Shirley Hooker, Barbara Hackett and
Vernelle Agee; one brother, Willie Eugene Ragland (Joan); one sister in law
Dorothy (Dot) Ragland and numerous nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.
The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00PM Saturday, January 11, 2025 at
Dunkum Funeral Home in Dillwyn, Virginia. The funeral service will be conducted
at 2:00PM on Sunday, January12, 2025 at Glenmore Community Church,
Howardsville, Virginia by Pastor Russell Snoddy and Pastor Billy Swann. Burial will
follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be
