James Robert (Sonny) Oakley Jr

James R. Oakley, Jr. (Sonny) gained his wings on February 4 and went home to be with the Lord. He was a giving person, and helping others gave him great joy. He was a devout, long-time member of St. Andrews Baptist Church, and loved his church family.  His faith in the Lord Jesus Christ guided him through everything he did. He especially enjoyed mentoring younger men in their search for a better life and their relationship with God.  He had several friends he referred to as “Brothers in Christ” who meant the world to him and with whom he enjoyed many shenanigans, most importantly hunting and fishing. He served in both the Army and Navy; and was proud to support his country and fellow veterans through The Wounded Warrior Project.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Joyner Oakley; parents, James R. Oakley Sr. and Mary Wilson Oakley; his brothers, Billy Oakley and Daniel (Buzzy) Oakley. 

Left to cherish his memory are his sisters; Elaine Herring, Judy Holloway, Dorothy (C.E.) Ward; brothers, Donnie (Debbie) Oakley and Russell (Connie) Oakley; daughters, Kathy (Tommy) Wells, and Lora Elmore; step-daughter, Donna White; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many other family members and friends. A special thanks goes to Billy Ruehl, John Buschmann, and Michael Kinder, who shared many hours and life-long activities with him.

A celebration of life will be held at St. Andrews Baptist Church in Dillwyn, VA, on Saturday, February 14, at 1 pm with Pastor Terry Toliver officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until the service at the church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be directed to The Wounded Warrior Project.
