James Myers Obituary

James Allen Myers, 71, of Buckingham, departed life on Tuesday, April 21, 2020, after a long period of ill health. He is survived by his wife Kay Webb Burke; son, John Christopher and his wife, Geeta: grandson, Sean.  Also surviving are step-children, Bethany B. Shilan and Bryant J. Burke; sister, Joyce Myers Brown; two nieces; three grandnieces, and close friends Ruth, Minnie and Emma Wallace.

A graduate of Virginia Tech, he enjoyed a 30-year career with Virginia Cooperative Extension, spending most of his time in Buckingham County. He spent five years as the 4-H agent before becoming the Agriculture and Natural Resources agent where he answered thousands of questions from Buckingham County residents and others about gardening, pests, crops, beef, pork, poultry and many other miscellaneous topics.  In 1978, he worked with area cattle producers to form the Buckingham Cattlemen’s Association which implemented what was at that time an innovative genetics and marketing program.  Jim served as a member of the Peter Francisco Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Directors for seven years.

Jim also was involved in catering various functions, working the Midlothian Food Festival and the Ag. Agents’ booth at the State Fair for many years as well as local functions and fundraising efforts.  He was especially well known for his pork barbeque and his top-secret barbecue sauce.

Jim was recognized for his work at all levels and received numerous local, state, regional and national awards from many organizations.  Even in retirement, he maintained contact with and advised many in the community.  An avid surf fisherman, he looked forward to his trips to the Outer Banks.  He had a love of animals and a love for the land.

Jim will be missed by many.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Buckingham 4-H. Make checks payable to the Virginia Tech Foundation and put Buckingham 4-H - Jim Myers Memorial in the memo line. Mail contributions to Buckingham 4-H at P.O. Box 227, Buckingham, VA 23921.
