Frederick Cosby Sprouse, Sr., affectionately known as Freddie, Dad, or Papa, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2024, at the age of 91 years and 10 months (as he would proudly remind us). A native of Dillwyn, Freddie retired from Philip Morris after 33 years and returned home to Buckingham.
Freddie was the youngest of seven brothers, all of whom preceded him in death, along with his beloved mother, Hattie “Bubba” Sprouse Newton; his father, Elbon "Booney" Sprouse; and his son, F.C. Sprouse, Jr.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Sarah Stanley Sprouse; his daughter, Vickie Sprouse; his son, Elbon Sprouse, and wife Sarah Armstrong Sprouse; two grandchildren, Teresa Davis, and husband Daniel Davis, and Elbon "Noah" Sprouse; and two great-grandsons, Matthew and Bryson Davis. Freddie is also survived by his “bonus” brother, Jackie Dowdy, as well as a large extended family of nieces, nephews, friends, and church family.
Anyone who ever met Freddie knew what a kind, loving, character he was. He loved being around people and spending time with his family. He loved to watch the Dallas Cowboys and wrestling. Most of all, he enjoyed just sitting on the porch watching his grandchildren play.
Freddie always had a smile on his face and loved to do the same for others. When his health permitted, he decorated his home for Halloween and Christmas, passing out candy to thousands of children.
Freddie loved entertaining folks with his stories, especially of growing up with his brothers and his childhood at Sprouse’s Corner. Many will remember him by his sayings: “not bad for an old man” or “help the bear". No matter what, he will be greatly missed here on earth, but he loved Jesus, his family, and a good sip of moonshine.
Family will receive friends on Sunday, December 29, 2024 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, December 30, 2024 at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Dillwyn with interment in the church cemetery.
