Douglas Freeman Childress, age 68, died peacefully in his sleep, on March 31, 2026. Following a severe
stroke in January of 2025, Doug had been a resident at Holy Manor Nursing Home in Farmville, Va. Prior
to this time, he was a longtime resident of New Canton, Va.
Doug was predeceased by his parents Myrtie Kerns Childress and Walter Freeman Childress. He is survived by three sisters, Peggy C. Agee, Ina C. Betts, and Llewellyn C. Anderson, one nephew and four nieces, and two great nieces and three great nephews. A graduate of Buckingham County High School, Doug worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation until 2016 when he retired with 40 years of service.
His friends and acquaintances knew him as Maddog. Doug loved all things cars and his cowboy boots. He will be remembered for his generosity toward his closest friends and his enjoyment of remote-controlled vehicles.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, April 10, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, New Canton, at 11:00 am.
Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, Virginia will be handling the services. In lieu of flowers, please send
