John Staton Obituary

John Norvall Staton, 77, of Buckingham, passed peacefully on Thursday, December 13, 2018.  John loved his God and was a devoted disciple of Jesus Christ.  He was born January 29, 1941 in Washington D.C., the son of Irving Franklin and Ruth Bryant Staton.

John loved his church and his church family.  He was a faithful member of Glenmore United Methodist Church, having joined the membership in the late 1960s.

Of all the things that John has loved over the years, his Lord and his families were his most treasured joy.  He leaves his wife of 46 years, Frances Marsh Staton; his children, William R. Bishop and his husband, Roberto, Robert A. Bishop and his wife, Wendy and Jonathan Staton and his wife, Becky; grandchildren, Emma Grace Staton, Kaylee Faye Staton, Robert Cole Bishop and his wife, Patrice and Ann Marie Bishop and great-grandchildren Jaden, Memphis and Quinn Bishop and –Serenity Watson.  He is also survived by a sister, Barbara Ann Zagrod and her sons, Mark Zagrod and Stephen Zagrod.

John loved to work.  Having a father who instilled a strong work ethic, John became the youngest licensed electrician in Fairfax County.   He worked highline and distribution work up and down the east coast as a member of IBW Local 70, out of Washington D.C. As a member of Local 1181, he was Chief Shop Steward, served on the Executive Board and negotiated multiple union contracts.

John retired after 37 years working with Centel of Virginia.

John loved Buckingham County and its citizens.  At the age of 23 he moved to the county and for four years he operated a country store located on Route 20.  He had a successful commercial Angus beef farm.  He volunteered with numerous activities within the county including Weeblo and Cub Scouts, Dixie Youth League Baseball; taught a hunter safety course for 28 years and served on the Buckingham county Board of Supervisors representing Maysville district for one term.
